Check Your Siding After Extreme Weather

While we may have covered how to Care For Your Siding During Winter, the extreme weather can still wreak havoc.  With frigid temps, wind gusts and cold showers, there is always a potential for damage to occur no matter how well you maintain your home’s exterior.  You can greatly reduce the need for costly repairs or having to replace the entire siding on your home by running a thorough inspection after nasty storms or polar vortex fits from nature.  Here are a few key things to keep in mind when you check out your siding…

As you walk around the exterior, check for cracks, gaps, splits, slits or any other damage that might allow water to get into your home’s structure.  Damage to siding is pretty easily spotted but it is vital to have it repaired as soon as possible so nothing worse takes place inside the walls.  There are weep holes punched into the bottom of your siding that you should check.  These holes allow for drainage but severe weather can harm them or impede their function.

This is a big one with vinyl siding, especially in cases of extreme cold.  When the weather changes drastically, any water trapped inside siding material can expand by 10%, which causes pressure on your siding.  As the weather warms, that siding can then bow in the middle or become damaged.  Damage from a freeze/thaw cycle usually occurs because of the repeated effect year after year until, finally, it becomes too much for the siding.

If you notice that a section of your siding appears discolored, that can be an indicator of a major problem.  This usually means that moisture has accumulated beneath the material and can warp, or split, it.  Discoloration essentially shows you where the problem is occurring.

With extreme cold comes the desperate need for animals to find warmth in order to survive.  Raccoons, rats, etc., may burrow into the warmer areas of your siding.  While it isn’t fun to have a pest there in the first place, the space they’ve just made can attract termites, mites and other insects.  If you notice any areas that may have been penetrated by tiny paws, contact an animal control department or exterminator to make sure there is nothing claiming dominion over that space BEFORE you fix the siding.

When you notice any of the above issues and need repair to your siding, contact your local siding repair experts.  To prevent problems from getting worse or causing bigger issues down the road, you want to have a professional address the issue swiftly in order to make sure everything is taken care of properly.  If anything looks questionable but you aren’t sure if there is an actual issue, still have your Schaumburg Siding Experts inspect it.  This way you will know for sure if there is anything to take care of or if it truly is nothing to worry about.  Then you can get back to anticipating the warmer weather and everything to do in your yard without stressing about how your siding is holding up.
